why film and not digital?

Film is essential to my process. i take photos with a calculated contemplation and care, while still being receptive and ready to get the shot on a millisecond’s notice among the swiftly changing environments of wedding photography and documentary work. the way i shoot, film just makes sense. it gives my photos a distinctive quality that sets them apart to be uniquely mine— as no two film photographs will ever be the same. there is a misconception that analog is poor quality and unable to hold up in the digital age. digital does have its place, but you’ll most often find me shooting film.

“It took me showing my partner exactly one photo to convince him that we should hire Aly to photograph our wedding. It is so clear that Aly has mastered film photography. You look at her photos and can really tell that she is meant for film and it’s meant for her. I will scream her name at any and everyone who needs a photographer.”

“Aly was, without hyperbole, the dream wedding photographer. She is truly an expert with a level of artistry that we didn’t associate with wedding photos before her.”

- Lily & Scott

“aly captured so many moments of our wedding that define us & our family’s dynamic—we’re just in awe of how quick she was on her feet, seeing opportunities and setting up shots like a goddamn boss. she shot both film and digital. we are thankful and grateful that we trusted her for our wedding photos.”

- cesley & nick

“Aly was a joy to work with and did our entire wedding weekend for us as well as our engagement photos. We loved each photo she delivered— both digital and film. We had multiple family members comment that she was in the right place at the right time, how she blended in with our wedding ceremony beautifully, and made our guests feel comfortable being photographed. We absolutely recommend working with Aly for any occasion. Her photos capture the exact energy of each event she photographs.”

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

do you travel?

yes! i am based in richmond, virginia but my work frequently finds me in new york, DC, and new england. always happy to travel outside of that sphere, too!

okay, how much is the travel fee?

travel fees truly have so many variables, but any event that requires an overnight will always be a bit more expensive than day-trips (day-trips for me are any city less than 3 hours from richmond). travel fees will be worked into your final quote, and cover plane/train/gas, my meals, and my time.

will you tell us what to do?
what to wear?

it’s important to note that while my shooting style isn’t poses and pre-planned mood boards, i do offer heavy direction when i see fit — as the perfectionist in me will not allow otherwise. for the most part, the scene will just be unfolding in front of me, with me making minor tweaks to where you are standing, looking, etc in relation to where the light is.

for what to wear to your session, i have a detailed outfit guide that will help you understand what you should wear depending on the vibe you are going for.

how much to add film to my session or wedding?

my sessions are full film, and my weddings/elopements include a ton of film since that is my preferred medium of shooting. with your permission, i’ll always be reaching for my film cameras over my digital when i am at your event. full film weddings can be requested, i love when folks request that. i have backups for my backups, and a plan for every scenario that could go wrong. i consider myself a specialist in film, and i trust my film equipment more than i trust my digital setup.

Do you offer payment plans?

yep! happily.

Are you insured and licensed?

i am! most venues require it.

Do you backup your photographs?

yes. sessions and weddings are backed up onto two different harddrives until the final product has been safely delivered to you.

What’s your shooting setup and do you have backup gear?

for both sessions and weddings, i show up with anywhere from six to ten cameras. i have backups for my backups, and spare batteries and film galore. i am prepared for every scenario that could go wrong, so that nothing interferes with me getting the photos you hired me for. trust me, things do go wrong. you’ll want a photographer with backups for their backups and then some.

do we get any prints or albums?

you can always order prints and albums through my print shop, or take your photos elsewhere to be printed. wedding albums are included in my all-inclusive wedding package, otherwise the album is a la carte style and instead an add-on.

What kind of people do you work with?

there is definitely a trend in who i attract— fellow introverts, involved in the arts, animal lovers, sentimental, cinephiles. the people who’ve hired me who don’t match my energy and interests, respect it. and i think that’s most important. all of my clients have been incredibly trusting, never holding a heavy hand over the flow of our session. that’s not to say i haven’t collaborated with clients on bringing a specific vision of theirs to life, but my work does lean more into documentary and fly-on-the-wall shooting.
